I love a good fishing story and one of the best is found in the Bible, John 21: 1-17.
After a long night of fishing and no success at all, Peter and his fishing buddies are told to “throw your net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you’ll get some!”
Sure.
They did…. And they did.
Did catch fish that is. So many the story records that they couldn’t haul in the net because there were so many fish in it.
But it’s not about fish. It’s not about “success.” It’s not about being able to tell a great story.
It’s about what happens on the beach.
What happens on the beach is this fisherman, Peter, who seemed to fail in so many ways, re-discovers purpose. Jesus restores his hope and purpose.
Jesus deals with our “today’s” and points us to “tomorrow.”
Blessed to be a blessing.
It’s not about fish.
It’s about purpose.
Have you discovered yours?
This is such a great insight Tom. I remember how when me and my friends would go paintballing. After the game we would all come back and exchange stories about it. I can only imagine the stories that they told to people about how Jesus provided for them, and not only that, showed them what they needed to do as disciples.
Great story…very insightful!! Thank you Pastor Tom!!
I see an great example of compassion as well. He saw them toiling and he came by to help. Part of my purpose is being alert to the toil and pain of others and ask if they need help.
I love this, so refreshing and lets you relate to this amazing story. It makes us understand what is really important about this event.
At 27, I’m beginning to discover mine and it’s SO exciting. It’s whats on my heart and mind when I lay my head down at night and when I wake up in the morning. Passion for something and purpose awakens the human soul. At least it has mine.
